New Book: Managing Magic

I’ve just released a new book, and I’m pretty excited about it.

Introducing Managing Magic!

The small town of Uppernine, Virginia, is a nice place to live, assuming you don’t mind humid summers, windy winters, and random manifestations of magic. For thirty-year-old Delia May, it’s just a way of life: her family has managed Uppernine’s magic problems for four generations.

On any given day, she might deal with a vintage arcade game with a grudge, an abandoned house holding a real estate agent captive, a fantasy RPG adventure come to life at the city park, or even fiction heroes with plot problems at the used-book shop.

Lately, Delia has noticed that the magic is stronger and harder to control. Her competitor, AJ Toliver, pins the blame on the town’s racist history—and on Delia’s family. Can she uncover the truth before Uppernine is lost to the rising flood of magic?

The idea for this collection occurred to me many years ago. Wouldn’t it be funny if wizards weren’t revered as mysterious and powerful, but as essential servicepeople like plumbers? Well, I thought it was funny. So that’s what I wrote.

Each story is a bite-sized mystery as Delia tries to resolve the increasingly complicated magical incidents. Tied to her day-to-day job in this small Southern town is the growing reminder that past injustice has present consequences. It’s a little bit serious, a lot goofy, and all around fun.

Now available in print and eBook on Amazon!

Come on over

I wouldn’t say that Substack and I are, you know, serious yet. But we’ve gone out a few times and I think it’s going pretty well.

Substack is essentially a blogging platform with easier Like, Comment, and Subscribe features. I’m still setting things up; so far I have a grand total of two (2) posts. But it’s very promising. I like the idea of posting whatever I’m thinking about (no, really?) for free. I also like the longer-term goal of sharing my short stories and other content for people who pledge support.

So click below to check things out over there. It might turn into something beautiful.

Dear Cindy

Today I contacted the local newspaper about a press release announcing my novel. The email exchange progressed like this:

Dear Ms. Ames,
I’m a local author. Included is a press release announcing the publication of my new novel. Thank you!
— Sara R. Jones

Dear Sara,
Do you have any book signings scheduled for the near future that we could include in the article?

Okay, no, I didn’t actually say that last part. But we did go from formal titles to casual nicknames within five emails. If we’d kept going, I might have been invited to the family Christmas dinner and possibly asked to be in her daughter’s wedding.

As mentioned, I am signing books tomorrow. Follow me on Facebook (Sara Roberts Jones Author) to keep up to date.

(Note: actual names and actual emails altered. Consider this a fictionalized version. It’s what I do.)

Welcome!

Have some coffee… or I’ve got iced tea, do you like sweet or unsweet?… and take a seat. Let’s visit.

If you’re here for my books, you’re in the right place! You can find all of them on Amazon:

If you’ve come to the blog to see what I have to say, I discuss issues that I write about: writing, reading, common-sense relationships, womanhood, marriage, Christian authoritarianism, patriarchy, recovery from legalism, coming to terms with racism, and just being a good person.

Lately I’ve been writing more on Substack, which you can subscribe to for free: Ordinary & Oblique

You can find me on Facebook as Sara Roberts Jones Author; but that page isn’t very active because I didn’t feel like playing Facebook’s engagement game.

Check under the Writing > Blogging menu above to find links to posts I’ve written elsewhere.

And thanks for dropping in. I hope you’ll stay with me!
